Your concern

Brightening the eyes

Brightening the eyes often means wanting to look less tired and rediscovering a fresher, more radiant expression around the eyes.

Brightening the eyes often means wanting to look less tired and rediscovering a fresher, more radiant expression around the eyes. This is a frequent, legitimate and natural concern, which may involve the appearance of dark circles, bags, wrinkles around the eye contour or a dull complexion at the eyelid level. Every body shape, age and skin type is different: causes and solutions vary from one person to another. The appropriate options are determined following a personalised consultation with Pr Ignacio Garrido.

Several factors can explain a less luminous-looking gaze

  • Natural and biological causes: skin ageing, loss of sub-orbital volume, skin thinning, decreased elastin and collagen production.
  • Genetic and anatomical factors: pigmented or hollow dark circles, predisposition to under-eye fat pouches.
  • Lifestyle and environment: lack of sleep, stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, sun exposure.
  • Specific factors: allergies, local circulatory disorders, certain medications.

These phenomena are normal and evolve over time. It is possible to understand their origin through clinical examination in order to propose targeted and progressive approaches.

Possible solutions

Depending on the cause and the patient's wishes, several options may be considered. Two broad categories exist: aesthetic medicine and aesthetic surgery.

Aesthetic medicine

  • Hyaluronic acid injections (treatment of hollow dark circles): localised restoration of sub-orbital volume to reduce shadows and the hollow appearance. The procedure is performed in the clinic and adapted to individual anatomy.
  • Botulinum toxin injections (expression lines): targeted treatment of dynamic wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet) to soften the expression.
  • Peels, skin boosters and resurfacing techniques (laser, radiofrequency): improvement of skin quality, reduction of pigmentation spots and improvement of hydration and texture for a more radiant gaze.

Aesthetic surgery

  • Lower blepharoplasty: correction of fat pouches and improvement of the sub-orbital contour to reduce the appearance of fatigue.
  • Upper blepharoplasty: removal or repositioning of excess skin and tissue from the upper eyelids when it alters the openness of the gaze.
  • Lipofilling (micro fat graft): volume restoration around the eyes using autologous fat to fill hollows and harmonise the orbital contour.

The choice between these options will depend on clinical examination, the extent of the concerns (pigmentation, volume loss, pouches), and the expectations expressed during consultation.

Management pathway

  • Initial consultation: assessment of the oculo-palpebral area, analysis of causes (volume, skin, pigmentation), discussion of expectations and medical history.
  • Personalised plan proposal: choice of appropriate techniques, explanation of possible benefits, limitations, risks and treatment schedule.
  • Care modalities: procedures in the clinic (for most aesthetic medicine procedures) or in the operating theatre (for surgery). Information on pre-operative steps, possible anaesthesia and the recovery period.
  • Follow-up and safety: check-up appointments, monitoring of aftercare and adjustments if necessary. Priority is given to dialogue and progressive treatment.

Expected results and follow-up

Realistic goals are an improvement in the brightness of the gaze, harmonisation of the eye contour and a natural result suited to the face. Results vary depending on the individual, the severity of the concern and the type of procedure chosen. Some treatments require regular maintenance (injections, skin boosters), while others provide more lasting correction (blepharoplasty, lipofilling). Regular medical follow-up allows progress to be assessed and procedures to be adapted over time.

Frequently asked questions

Are results immediate? Some treatments (injections, light peels) produce a visible effect quickly, while others (resolution of post-surgical swelling, remodelling after lipofilling) take several weeks. The consultation specifies the expected timeline.

Are there non-surgical alternatives? Yes: hyaluronic acid injections, botulinum toxin, peels and laser or radiofrequency techniques are non-surgical alternatives suitable for many cases.

How long before returning to activities? For aesthetic medicine procedures, return to activities is often rapid (a few hours to a few days depending on local signs). After eyelid surgery, convalescence is longer (a few days to several weeks depending on the case). This information is provided during consultation.
